Tonight I’ve finally finished working three weeks of working a double shift. Basically I’ve worked between 10 to 14 hours every day for the last three weeks and I am fried (I’m refraining from another, “Fried Day joke, you’re welcome). I’m really beat and I’ve got a couple big blog posts coming up on Sunday and Monday, so tonight I’m just going to go home and get drunk out of my fucking mind and relax. Also, the traffic really slows down here on Saturdays because people are out and about and not looking at blogs and I’m not going to kill myself when there isn’t a huge audience out there. But I want to put something up to entertain the loyal MAD readers and commenters that come here on Saturday, I do appreciate it! “Boris” and I were talking about SCTV on the phone the other night and saying how funny it was and recalling different bits that were hilarious. There didn’t used to be a lot of clips on YouTube from the old SCTV shows, but I checked last night and there’s a ton of them. So I thought I’d put up some of my favorites. Hey, it beats a hot dog at the Papaya, right Al?
And a quick tribute to Alex Trebek. And the answer is...”Drunken, cursing, Canadian game show host."

This boy wouldn't mind the pain,
Would always feel the same,
If this boy gets you back again.

"so tonight I’m just going to go home and get drunk out of my fucking mind and relax."
I think I will do the same!!
John Candy was the best,,,,loved him. SCTV was Harold Ramis big break also. Leave it to Beaver skit was so damn funny. Must mention Planes Trains and Automobiles,,,,Candy was at his peak. Beatles video This Boy makes me sad,,,still miss John. Enjoy the party filled weekend.
Lola Heatherton!!
@Meleah: Glad to have inspired you!
@Al: I love "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." John Candy was great. George Harrison said that "This Boy" was John Lennon's attempt at writing a Smokey Robinson type song. A great Beatles tune that's not played much.
@Wendy: To Lola Heatherton!
Leave it to Beaver is the most classic of the SCTV skits. FWIW, my kid is up for a part of the cast at Second City.
Catherine O'Hara was ridiculously hot.

@Mike Hunt: That's too cool about your kid and the Second City. Let me know if he gets the part, I have friends in Chicago who would go. I once wrote a story about The Annoyance Theater in Chicago.
@csp: Agreed, she still is and a great comedic actress.
@Jaws: Great clip! I forgot all about that movie, thanks for posting that. Hilarious!
SO many great SCTV bits "Battle of The PBS Stars"
with John Candy as Julia Child fighting Martin Short as Mr. Rogers.
Classic stuff.
Even talking about these bits the other night had us laughing our asses off.
Brilliant bits from a great cast.
You are not the only one that is beat! Spent 4 hours at a Widespread Panic show last night breathing in second hand reefer and toasted on 147 PBR tall boys.....now off to the Drive by Truckers to drink146 PBR tall boys and breathe in second hand reefer! I've turned into a redneck sum bitch this weekend! Cheers and infinite beers to you dude! John Candy was THE man!
@"Boris": I could watch these clips all night and last night I did!
@Professor Dungpie: I'm glad you're cutting down on your drinking, I was worried about you! Have a great time at the show, I'm going to see The Damned tonight, will post about it tomorrow.
The great Bill Murray playing Joe DiMaggio on SCTV in a skit called DiMaggio's on the Wharf was an all time favorite.
I was too busy to read this yesterday !
@John: I never saw that one, I'll have to search for it on the internet.
@Gene: Better late than never!
SCTV was so funny! I still have a wicked O'Hara crush. And I miss John Candy.
@Biff: Agreed on all counts, best show ever!
So pre-SCTV, there was a house in Toronto where the (sometimes) roommates were John, Eugene, Marty and Paul Schaefer; and I was lucky enough to be invited to one of their parties.....a MOST unforgettable experience......I still get twinges in my ribs from the damage done from laughing so hard that night. Back in those days, John would take on the behavior of a somewhat annoying but BIG-hearted soul ,buyin' the drinks and crackin' wise....and when he took on that persona people called him Johnny Toronta(sic).....and that character eventually became Johnny LaRue. In the 80s he became part owner (with Wayne Gretzky among others) of the Toronto Argonauts (Canadian Football League team), and at half-time he would ride around the stadium with a t-shirt launcher while the crowd cheered him ecstatically.....and he had finally become the real Johnny Toronta. Unfortunately, the main moneybags owner turned out to be a coin-stealin', stock-swindling dickfuck, and I've always felt that it was the worries about his debt that eventually killed John over a period of time.(Just my theory.)
Everytime I think of him, my brain immediately screams out the f-word, 'cuz I think of all the laughs (and tears) we missed out on........but then I think of Johnny Toronta......and especially the multi-part Christmas Show that LaRue produced............and I smile......he was such a GOOD person.
Best show ever....Guy Cabalaro doing backflips out of his wheelchair
@DrBOP: Too cool memories and a great story! I would've loved to have been there. TO JOHNNY TORONTA! Thanks for sharing the story!
@tehennessey: I remember watching SCTV at your house on Friday nights, good times!
Late to the party, but count me too as one who stayed up late as a teenager to watch SCTV. High Q was great, but even funnier was the follow up "Night School High Q". Can't find it on youtube unfortunately but side splittingly good.
Polynesiatown
Three-CP-1 Russian television.
Fishin Musician
Days of the Week.
and of course Great White North.
@Spike: I agree with you on the Night School skit, it used to be on YouTube, but it's been taken down. The other skits you mentioned are all great ones as well! TO SCTV!
I loved their take on "The Towering Inferno:" Starts with someone (not sure who) taking to the stairs at the top of the building to evacuate, then he trips. Throughout the episode they'd cut back to him, tumbling and screaming down the stairs. Still cracks me up. Why don't they show SCTV reruns anywhere dammit?
