November 7, 2011

Tonight I’m meeting my friend, Paul Scanlon at our usual meeting place, Mumbles, over on Third and 17th St. We’re meeting to celebrate the publication of the book, “Fear and Loathing at Rolling Stone.” It’s a collection of Hunter S. Thompson’s essential writing for Rolling Stone magazine. Paul edited the book along with Rolling Stone editor and publisher Jann Wenner. Jann Wenner wrote the Foreword and Paul wrote the Introduction to the book. Let’s get to Mumbles and check it out.

Mumbles isn't far from where I live. We'll just cut through Union Square Park and it's a few blocks away.

Aaaahhhhh!

Oh no! An upside down Cardboard Box Man! And he looks pissed, let's get away from him before he sprouts arms and starts inflicting pain and damage on unsuspecting passerbys.

And here we are, Mumbles, a sanctuary to sooth my jangled nerves.

I think I spy a familiar face at the  bar.

It's Paul, clutching a copy of the Hunter book.

Here's bartender Hal who's always quick with a drink.

Beer and loathing at Mumbles bar. The book is a solid collection of Hunter S. Thompson's writing for Rolling Stone. There's also unpublished correspondence from Hunter and Jann Wenner in the book. Check out a preview of it at Amazon, but I suggest you buy a copy from St. Mark's Bookshop.

A longshot of the wooden bar at Mumbles.

I love the Budweiser painting in here.

As the evening wore on, Sarah took over bartending duties from Hal. Sarah's in a band called The Sometime Boys and they play the first Friday of every month at Branded Saloon. I'm going to try to make the first Friday in December and you should too.

Gumby and Hunter. No need to tell Gumby about the bats, the poor fucker will see them soon enough. Goodnight everybody and see you tomorrow after dark.

Hey Mr. Tambouring Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle-jangle morning I’ll come following you.

Ive subscribed to RS for close to thirty years,,,,but have read a lot of Hunter's work. The mag isn't what it used to be, maybe because people like HT and Paul Nelson are gone. This bar was @358? and Paul Scanlon is dressed exactly the same,,,,and Hal,,,,he looks like the real deal,,,,a true bartender,,,,,and lots of wood,,,,sign of a good bar.

I hope you watched that Giants-Patriots game on the tv there ! .... what a game it was !

@Duncester: Excellent advice!

@Al: Mumbles is a great bar to hang out at, not too loud and not too light. Rolling Stone still has it's moments, Matt Taibbi writes some great political articles for them.

@Meleah: Buy the book at St. Mark's!

@GENE: We were watching the Giants and Patriots and it was a great game!

@GENE: Paul is a fan, but I got into it too for once! Looking forward to this weekend with 2/3 of the BBC!

@Professor Dungpie: You're a Belieber? Who knew! I hear you about work, I'm still burned out from last Friday night! Cheers, Professor!

@csp: Is there a typo somewhere I'm not seeing?

November 7, 2011 | Registered CommenterMarty After Dark

@MAD: Nay. And like a wild horse, I'm bitless.

Love that Dylan song! Gumby looks particularly happy today. Must be the peyote.

November 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBiff

@csp: He feels your pain.

@Biff: The only thing that worried Gumby was the ether. There is nothing more
irresponsible and depraved than a green cartoon bag in the depths of an ether binge...

People here in Adelaide, Australia are excited because we are getting a TGI Fridays.

My home town can be a sad place sometimes.

November 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBrooksy in Oz

TGI Friday going down under a bit of excitement is kinda like the Germans being turned on by Budweiser, which is a big hit over there, ah yes,,,,another you go figure... Sorry Marty, I know you drink Bud,,,lol

November 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAl

@Brooksy in Oz: Ha ha ha! That is a little sad! Send me a photo when it goes up if you get a chance. Good to hear from you!

@Al: That's funny about Budweiser in Germany, I had no idea!

Hi Paul! will be sure to get a book. that Dylan live clip was a treat!

November 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGreen Monkey

@rr: Thanks for buying some books at St. Mark's, very nice! I didn't know that Budweiser was a popular German beer, I don't know a lot about beer. I just drink it to get drunk. Perfect quote, as always!

@Green Monkey: The book is a fantastic collection and Paul wrote a great introduction to it. I put up "Mr. Tambourine Man" because I'm pretty sure it was Hunter Thompson's favorite song. One of my favorites too.

November 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

@Lindsay: You should stop in next time you pass Mumbles, it's a nice little place and the food is good there. Try the pot stickers, that's what I had.
