I’m too tired to even bitch about work tonight. I found out when I came in that I might have to stay until around four in the morning and damned if that shit came true. Now all I want to do is have a beer or twenty and go to sleep. I was exchanging emails with MAD commenter and one third of the BBC, Gene Rubbico and told him my situation. I also told him not to expect much of a post today. Well he sent me back an email saying that he and his wife Smoopy were just getting ready to go out and hit some bars and that he’d take his camera and send them in. Gene’s a better photographer than me, so I told him that would be great. So today, Gene takes over the main section of the MAD blog. I was going to call it GAD for Gene After Dark, but then Smoopy thought of GAS’D, for Gene and Smoopy (After) Dark. Perfect! So take it away, Gene, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to GAS’D!

Thanks to Gene and Smoopy for doing this! Saved the day from what would have been a real boring post! Great photos, Gene, wonderful work!
Great job by Gene! Thanks for stepping up to the plate, loved the photos and the night out in Maryland!
These are some great photos Gene,,,,those are real bars,,,like in a neighborhood with people living upstairs,,,love all your pictures,,,thanks to you and Smoopy,,,now I have to check these out,,,,Ive been to Columbia and Fells point,,,,,and Marty thanks for throwing in the clip of Neil Young while we waited for this.
Very lovely tour. Thanks guys. Marty feel better. It takes a lot of work to blog daily or nightly.
Great post!! I love Baltimore, & those bars look perfect. Thanks.
A lot of fun last night ... 5 bars is a slow day - but it was quality over quantity ! ..... plus, the Dark & Stormy I had at Little Havana started to do me in :)
After a good gym trip and sweating out all the booze ... I'm ready for Round 2 tonight -- as we warm up for NYC next weekend !
Great to get a tour of another city, maybe you could have other stand-by guest hosts to help fill in for those miserable work nights. That bathroom reminds me of a lot of bathrooms I saw in London. Teeny tiny sink and everything together. Big Al's last photo made me laugh.
Great night on the GAS’D Tour!
Amazing, all the Cigarette Machines!
Thanks for "Guest Hosting"!
Where are you "Guano" go tonight?
Going to hang out on/near Fort Ave. tonight ... real places and real people and cheap drinks !
that top picture of gene and smoopy is cute! loved the photos and the surprise link cracked me up! forgot about that guy! lol!
Love the dive bars of Baltimore. Used to hang out in them a bit back in the 80's. That's first place (Banner's) reminds me of a Baltimore Hole in the Wall called Kummer's Little Store, which I'm sure has been gone for years.
Nice change of pace to let someone else take over in another city since you were beat, Marty.
DAMN! Thats a years worth of bird crap in one outing! Gotta come to Colorado and do a "GAS'd on the Road".
I havent been to baltimore in 23 years...
I LOVE that city!
thanks Gene and Smoopy.
GAS'D is a gas gas gas...great job by the always photogenic Smoopy and GENE...only been to baltamore a few times for the preakness...in and out...those "waterin' holes look great...thanks!
off topic...surprise surprise ...but i read somewhere (might be at evgrieve) that the NYPD closed down bar #30 on the crawl...allegedly servin' minors...
What is there more kindly than the feeling between host and guest?

I can't help but wonder if Alfred Hitchcock didn't have a similar experience with bird crap on his car before making 'The Birds'. Looks like they had it in for you, Gene!
That bird crap.was amazing ! ... we wern't even parked under anything ! ... UFB !
@Kari - are you thinking Wee Blu Inn documentary when Britta's in town???
@Tomatic, we totally should! Although I prefer the DeerHunter in SF. I guess we could do the two and make it an official crawl.
Next time I get funding for a field trip, I'll be sure to make it Baltimore. Doesn't look like there are any frat boys in those surroundings. Hey Marty, I ran into some beautiful lady last night at you know where who told me she read through most of your 365 blog. Among the cognoscenti, it apparently is considered the bible of bar-hoppers. Sip Ahoy!
over at EVG, somebody coined the phrase "Tampon Hut". Let's pool resources and open up a saloon with that name. Just think of the fun we could have getting an illuminated sign permit from CB3.
@Uncle Waltie: What does cognoscenti mean? Hope to see you Tuesday! Sip ahoy! (Sip ahoy is a patented Uncle Waltie catchphrase, use with permission only!)
According to my dictionary, cognoscenti means "other drunks".
"An alcoholic is someone you don't like who drinks as much as you do."
Dylan Thomas
@Kari - there's a bar called the Deerhunter in Spanish Fork? (There's a BAR in Spanish Fork???) Brings up mental images of Deliverence-type people sitting around drinking at a Famous Dave's. A place like that might actually be considered kitchy-trendy in NYC, but in rural Utah it could be kind of scary!
@Tomatic, its awesome! Its a big log cabin with one room of pool tables, another room with a small stage for bands and an outdoor patio where they have concerts. Its across the street from the airport, so you know prime real estate. Look at what you missed out on while you lived there!
@Uncle Waltie: Ha! Stop by the Mars Bar today if you can!
Good stuff Gene and Smoopy!! I'd hate to see the size of the bird that shit all over your car.
Maryland looks like a nice place to sling back some brewskis! But anyone who thinks that's the smallest bathroom ever hasn't eaten downstairs at The House.
