December 13, 2011

One of the big Christmas attractions in New York City has always been the elaborate window displays at Macy’s. It’s only a few blocks from where I work so that’s tonight’s destination.

It's starting to get colder outside. Luckily it's not that far away.

And here we are, Macy's, the world's largest store.

The theme for their Christmas extravaganza this year is: "Believe." I believe that I'm glad I did all my shopping online and don't have to enter the "world's largest store." Okay, let's check out the window displays.

Lots of contraptions in this one, I can't really figure out what it's supposed to be. It kind of looks like a gynecologist's office on acid.

This one looks like a rendering of a Lady Gaga concert. I'm wondering if Barney's will sue.

This just is a mish-mosh of nothing. They kind of all look the same this year. I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed. Let's take a look around and see what else is going on around here.

Everyone's got their cell phones out taking pictures.

What's scarier than a group of clowns loitering outside of Macy's?

A clown deep in conversation on a cell phone. Oh well, it could be worse, he could be texting, in giant clown fonts.

Here's the Old Navy store down the street. They claim that the "Happiest Holidays are Funufactured Here." I thought a "funufacture" was something you had to go to the chiropractor for.

Knits for $14.95? Eddie are you kidding?

Nothing screams, "fun" like a Leonardo DeCaprio wax statue in the window.

And the Christmas spirit really kicks in when you go next door and have your retinas burned out by the nuclear neon lights at Tad's while breathing in the scent of rancid grilled meat. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. See you tomorrow after dark.

DiCaprio in wax,,,so lifelike,,,you know he's made some really good movies, very entertaining. "The Beach" is one of my all time favorites. I think that's Christopher Walken behind DiCaprio's left shoulder. Those crazy tourists will eat anything (Tad's) right?

'Just another Band from L.A.' - now there's another album I played so often back in the day that I wore the little hills and valleys in the vinyl groves flat in my copy....and...dare I say it?! Dare I!?!...well, here goes...JUST WHAT THE HELL DO THOSE CLOWNS THINK THEY'RE DOING!?! PhhHA! I just couldn't resist.

Check your e-mail for a little holiday cheer, Marty.

@AL: I agree about Leondardo, one of my favorites is, "Catch Me If You Can." And that Tad's is almost always 100% tourists, which amazes me. Why would you come to New York and eat at Tad's?

@Jaws: It's one of my favorite Mothers albums too! And your picture is posted, thanks!

Funufacturing, good god. Did you go see Santa upstairs???

You gotta get up to Bergdorf Goodman and check out their holiday windows. I save up all my stress throughout the year so I can release it on the annual Christmas walk down 5th Avenue...the windows are worth it.

We went to NYC last year to see all the decorations. It was fun but I get claustrophobic in crowds so we didn't stay long. Not sure what's going on in those windows either!

Am I total dork if i admit I spent some good time in my life in that macys? buying funky shoes and cool ass expensive clothes..
When I was a teen it was kinda a cool thing to do on my new york trips.. i had the coolest candies wedges for years i got there!
and When i was 18 i bought this awesome velvet purple very prince looking vest and ruffly blouse. looked awesome with my mohawk that i had to shave off to work.. oooh gasp for Macy's in new jersey.. back when the Macy there was called Bambergers..(ocean county mall, toms river)
and gasp.. i worked in the Liz Claiborne and DKNY dept...
I shaved off a mohawk for that.. lasted there for three months.then i got sick of it and forgot to show up..
and all my checks had the new york addie...
ok and adding this to make me ever dorkier.. my parents met at Bambergers in Newark...and they both had to work occasionally in the new york store.. especially when they worked parade day...

Beautiful photos Marty. Glad to see Christmas In Herald Square. The lighted shopping bag at Macy's is classic. Best to you too.

@Goggla: I didn't go inside, department store Santas scare me, but maybe I'll go back and get a photo of him. I'll check out Bergdorf Goodmans soon, I don't think I've ever looked at their Christmas windows.

@Sandy Claws: Glad you liked it, I thought it was hilarious too!

@Britta: I hear you about the claustrophobic crowds at this time of year, it's really bad in Times Square.

@Gidgie: Great stories, I want to see a picture of you with the mohawk! And it's cool your parents met at a Bamberger's!

@Melanie: Thanks and I agree about that giant lit shopping bag!

I'm glad I did not look at those windows on Saturday (they really suck this year!) .... me and Terry were right by there - but I was more worried about getting a beer !

December 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

@Lindsay: Glad you liked that, I did too!

@GENE: You made the right decision! They suck this year, beer trumps Macy's windows for sure!

damn been late or have missed the MAD tea party as of late...i'm guilty of being "over zealous" w/ the spirits off the season...off topic and once again i apologize...MAD is one of the few that could generate comments about a fuckin' window display...

“You cannot see what I see because you see what you see. You cannot not know what I know because you know what you know. What I see and what I know cannot be added to what you see and what you know because they are not of the same kind. Neither can it replace what you see and what you know, because that would be to replace you yourself.”

@rr: I hear you about the over zealous spirits, I'll be tippin' a few of them tonight, hopefully with swizzle sticks attached! Nice quote, but I feel like I'm high while reading it, maybe someone dosed my water. I hope so!

Fun post, Marty! That wax figure looks oddly like Edward Norton to me. Is the Christmas department inside Macy's a year round affair? It was full blast in October & totally empty. Very surreal.
You gotta go to Dyker Heights for Christmas lights! Haven't been for a few years, but will definitely be down there next week.

December 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteronemorefoldedsunset

@onemorefoldedsunset: I don't think the Macy's Christmas department is a year round affair, they probably just set it up early trying to cash in. I've been to Dyker Heights and its truly over the top! I look forward to your pictures of it!

I'm glad my gyno office doesn't look like that! We had a store here that used to do huge candy window displays, they were awesome. Sad they stopped. Those were just...odd.

December 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkari

@kari: They were odd, indeed. The worst Macy's Christmas windows I've ever seen!

December 14, 2011 | Registered CommenterMarty After Dark

Hmmm. I thought these window displays were kind of cool. Kind of. In a creepy sort of way. Except the characters look like giant, frozen Bratz dolls (which are, like, soooo five years ago). And the dude on the bike or whatever looks like the postal carrier from one of those Christmas claymation shows. You know who I mean? The one that reminds me of Dick Van Dyke? Anyway, I don't understand why they're all flying or riding or working with beakers at a lab. And I don't understand why there's a picture frame in the middle of it that looks like it's a tv with a symphony conductor on it. And I also don't understand why, if the theme of the season is "Believe," everything in their window displays looks like it's sitting atop a deconstructed timepiece? Shouldn't the theme then be "Christmas is Timeless" or "Santa's Watching You" or something to do with Dali or at least the Rolling Stones? I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Mariah Carey even WEARS a watch.

December 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBiff

@Biff: Ha ha ha! Agree with you on all points given! And I'm curious, are Bratz dolls made of Bratwurst?

December 14, 2011 | Registered CommenterMarty After Dark

"clown font" just the thought of it creeps me out.
