Friday Night Midnight Movie—Glengarry Glen Ross
One of the things with this new blog that will be nice for me is I don’t have to go out if I don’t want to. I didn’t make any self-imposed rules like I did with the 365 blog, so it could be looser and a little more relaxed, because last year just about killed me. I am going to update it every day though and most nights I will go out and do something, even if it’s just some random photos in a section of town. But the one night I’m not going out is going to be the night I dreaded every week while doing the 365 blog. Those of you who followed it (and that’s pretty much everybody who’s following this one, and I thank all of you for being loyal and continuing to read MAD) know which night I’m talking about because every week I would go on a whining spree that would make Doug and Wendy Whiner blush. That’s right, tonight, Friday night.
I hate going out on Friday and Saturday nights. They’re the amateur nights of the week and everything is crowded, especially here in New York and every other person is blotto on booze or one thing or another. And on Fridays I don’t get out of work till around 11pm at the earliest, so it was a real nightmare going to bars last year and dealing with babbling idiots schlocked out of their gourds and trying to get them to pose for a photo. So what I’m going to do on Friday’s instead is watch a movie and take photos of key scenes and then put together a mini-still movie of the original complete with dialogue. Oh and if the movie is in color, I’m going to pull the opposite of what they did to “It’s A Wonderful Life” and take the color out of it to keep it true to the MAD black and white color scheme.
Tonight’s movie is one of my all time favorite films—Glengarry Glen Ross. The film itself reminds me somewhat of the movie, “Reservoir Dogs.” Both are dialogue-driven films and both of them have an almost exclusive male-only cast. The only female in Glengarry Glen Ross is the coat check woman at the Chinese restaurant. Plus both have a surprise twist involving a key character towards the end. So without any further whoop-dee-do, for tonight’s Friday Night Midnight Movie, I present: Glengarry Glen Ross.

Me and Smoops went to 7 bars last night ........ :)
Oh...My...God...the M.A.D. version of AMC classics!! And me all out of microwave fucking popcorn.
Classic post, Marty!
One of my favorite movies as well! A nice "After Dark" feature.
(it looks great in the Black and White shots as well)
I always felt it SHOULD have been done in Black and White.
Seeing this. I rest my case.
Well done Daddio!
I've never even heard of that movie but if Ed Harris and Kevin Spacey are in it, definitely worth watching. Except maybe this condensed version is better :)
@GENE: Did you have 3.764 drinks?
@Jaws: Thanks! I'm wearing the Jaws jersey tonight. Check it out tomorrow!
@"Boris:" Thanks, Daddio, it was fun to put together and adds a little something different once a week. Hey I'm listening to your Secret Weapon lovehate show on Woody Radio right now. Great job and tunes! And Gidget picked some great movie lines to throw in. Everyone check it out at: www.woodyradio.com.
@kari: You really should watch the whole movie, it's one of my favorites. The acting and dialogue are great!
kari...you gotta view this one entirely...yes the MAD version is interesting but does not "tell" the whole story
jaws...you don"t have a back-up stash of plain old popcorn?
GENE...only seven...how far did you have to drive?

I love this! And you picked one of my all time favorites! This movie has so many classic lines in it and I think you caught them all! Is this going to be a weekly thing?
@Barfly: Yep, I'll be doing this every Friday night, glad you like the idea!
@Marty: we only had 3,763 drinks :(
@rr: we went to the Federal Hill area of Baltimore last night -- and it's only 10 minutes away. Only planned on going to like 3 or 4 places ... but it wound up being 7. The record is 17 in one day :)
Going to the Canton neighborhood today to check out a place I haven't been to yet .... Walt's Inn ........ Marty's co-pilot AL actually asked me about it.
@GENE: I hope you make up for that tonight! I just got off the phone with Al! I'm getting ready for a late night Cheeseburger Saturday night!
GENE...damn you knocked 99 off the wall...if memory serves me well...(almost an oxymoron0...i have no memory...i sorta think the most 99 did in one day was fourteen...
rr
@Marty: You must have ESP, why? because Glengarry is a movie that I have been watching off and on this past week. Dave to RIcky: "I come in here today,, I get humiliated by some jag-off cop,,, I get accused,,,I get the shit thrown in my face by you,,,you genuine shit because your top name on the fucking board". Ricky: "is that what I did Dave,,,I humiliated you,,,gee,,Im sorry". Dave: "sitting on top of the world,,everything is peachfuzz" . Ricky: "and I don't have a moment to spare for some busted out humanitarian down on his luck lately,,,fuck you Dave". This movie is a classic and Ed Harris was fantastic in it. I have memorized the entire thing. This is why this MAD is really cool,,,,anything you come up with can be so much fun,,,like reading great lines from a great film,,,,with the best actors at their peak. My opinion this was a classic post today.
@rr: You are correct, sir! 14 was the tops, I think I may have done that a couple days during the week.
@Al: "Oooh, let me buy you a pack of gum, I'll show you how to chew it!" That's so funny you've been watching it all week. I've probably watched it at least 200 times! I never get tired of it. I'm glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for deeming it "classic post worthy!"
great idea love it!!!!!
Fuck you. That's my name.
You know why, mister? 'Cause you drove a Hyundai to get here tonight, I drove an eighty thousand dollar BMW. *That's* my name.
I forgot to add how much I enjoyed the SNL clip with Joe Piscopo, "the Whiners" was so funny, I had never seen that before. I have actually seen people like that at restaurants and wonder why they hell they even bother going out. Hilarious clip.
@cp: Good quote!
@Al: Pisopo had his moments on SNL and that was one of them.
@rr & @Marty:
Actually in the 99 beers book ... you did 17 the first day. Then 16, 13, 13, 14, 14, & 13.
I still think you actually did 100 .......
@GENE: I gotta re-read that thing one of these days!
@Marty:
I can sympathize with you in the book ...... you're going through hell and feeling it ..... I can relate to it 100% ...... the pub crawling business is not for the weak or timid !
but ... I've done 17 twice. Once in NYC and once in Chicago. Terry set the all time one day record of 21 in Chicago on the day I did 17. While we were out - he snuck in a beer at an extra spot on me ... then at the end of the night I had a good bloody mary and that seemed to do me in for the night. I was at # 17 having a beer - and I just ran out of steam and called it a night ....... Terry went to 3 more before coming in.
I don't think I could every get to 22 in one day to get the #1 spot back :(
And to think that all they can come up with these days as far as ensembles go is the cast of "Valentine's Day." Geesh.
@Biff: Sad times indeed!
Oh yay! I love your Friday Night idea for MAD. :)
(p.s I always keep a running notepad open and comment as I read along)
As you can tell I'm trying to slowly but surely catch myself up on your blog... I didn't want to skip ahead.
I've never seen Glengarry Glen Ross. Ooh, Kevin Spacey, I must rent this movie.
@Darleya: It's one of my favorite movies, you should really check it out.
