Two of my favorite blogs are EV Grieve and Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York. They’re two great blogs about New York and I’ve found many kindred spirits at both of them through their comments section and even met some of them in person. And tonight I’m meeting another. Crazy Eddie is always good for a laugh with his witty comments and I take his observations on New York City to heart, because he’s lived in the East Village for his entire life. He picked the spot to meet at and guess what? It’s a bar! And it’s called Percy’s, so it’s off we go.
And here we go down 14th street. Even though it's 7:45, it's still bright out, one of the few things I hate about summer, it gets dark too late.
Union Square Park is filled with people. Note the walking texter, God I hate that!
This sign always makes me think of Dr. Ruth's vagina.
And speaking of EV Grieve, whenever I see a vacant lot, I think of ET.
I keep meaning to come here some night to this coffee shop. It looks about as old school as you can get.
And here we are, Percy's Tavern. Let's check it out.
Since it's a Sunday, there's plenty of seats at the bar. This is why Sunday's are my favorite night to go out.
And Sarah, the lovely bartender on duty is quick with a beer.
A view of the bar from where I was sitting.
There's tables up in the front of the bar.
And a long communal table and stools line the wall near the window opposite the bar.
There's also outside tables to dine and drink at on the sidewalk.
A Guinness painting in the window.
An impressive list of the beers available at Percy's.
A long shot of the bar.
And here he is, the man of the hour, Crazy Eddie. I have to keep his real identity secret because, well, I can't tell or both my big toes would get broken and we don't want that to happen, now do we? But I did have a great time hanging out with Crazy Eddie, a kindred spirit and a life-long East Village resident.
There's Jameson on the walls...
Jameson on the bar...
And here the lovely Orla serves us up shots of Jameson.
Cheers...
And goodnight everybody and see you tomorrow after dark. Special thanks to Crazy Eddie for picking Percy's and hanging out with me. I hope to see you soon again!

I thought upon seeing Crazy Eddie I would be reminded of commercials of an electronics chain. Imagine my surprise when his shirt put an Olivia Newton John song in my head. "I want to see Ed. get physical, physical." Stupid brain.
To digitally blindfolded shots!
sarah and orla are insaaaanely lovely indeed. your night out is insaaaaane.

@csp: Ha! To digitally blindfolded shots!
@esquared: An insaaaaaane cheers to you!
@GENE: That link is insaaaaaane! (Okay, I too will stop now.)
Don't bother with that coffee shop. I love diners and coffee shops, but I'm sorry to say that one is better on the outside than on the inside. And, unless someone here can say otherwise, I've never heard anyone else say anything positive about it. But. we'll see....maybe the threat of IHOP will cause some improvements...
I'm glad you had fun with Crazy Eddie. And I am cracking up at your Dr. Ruth's Vagina comment! Ahahhahahahahhahahahha
Geeez...thanks alot for that Dr. Ruth crack Marty...I just finnished lunch, and now it's all over my damn keyboard...ump....urk....here I go again...uurrroooarrrrk.....
@Goggla: That's a disappointment, I thought it would be a cool, old school place, but I guess you can't judge a book by its cover.
@Meleah: Glad you got a chuckle out of that.
@Jaws: It might be time for a new keyboard now. Sorry!
That Coffee shop reminded me of "Midnight Cowboy" when Joe Buck looked in and saw Ratso sitting there, with wet, slobbered nickles and pennies. Percy's looks like a great bar, somewhat like Fedora's after the remodeling,,,,the stools with black leather and studs around the bistro table,,,similar stools at Fedora's bar and this place has that clean look to it also, sure Stulman isn't involved?,,,(don't hate me for making the comparison,,,but you know me) :)
I saw a Pennsylvania beer on that list (Victory) so that makes it a a better-than-average bar in my mind! Every time I see a vacant lot I think it should be turned into a community garden. I've got tomatoes on the mind.
@Al: That's funny, Crazy Eddie and I were talking about Midnight Cowboy last night! And Percy's is nothing like the new Fedora. Here's just some of the differences, Percy's has bottled beer, Fedora doesn't. You can actually hear people talk in Percy's. They have live music in Percy's, not some piped in techno crap with an overloud bass thumping. I didn't see one person texting in Percy's. Drinks are affordable at Percy's, if you have more than a couple at the new Fedora you won't be able to make your rent that month, unless you're some high-powered Wall St. yuppie, which most of the crowd at Fedora appear to be. As I've always said, it's the people inside the bar and behind the bar that give it it's true character and the crowd at Percy's couldn't be more different than the texting, screaming dullards that now populate the new Fedora. Okay, I'm done!
@Britta: It is a better than average bar for sure! And every time I see a vacant lot I think of ET.
Wait, I'm getting the impression you didn't like Fedora's.
First of all, I'd like to give a shout out to the dueling pay phones on 14th. Second, your Dr. Ruth comment made me spit up coffee on my keyboard. And third, Percy's looks like a real nice place for laid-back peeps to kick back and down some suds. And apparently, it's a draw for the famous entertainment types as well - as evidenced by Tom Cruise's workout gear hanging on the wall behind Sarah.
@csp: Well, I don't know what gave you that impression! (The new Fedora sucks monkey lungs on Ritz crackers that have been shit out of Andy Griffith's ass, pass it along.)
@Biff: "it's a draw for the famous entertainment types as well - as evidenced by Tom Cruise's workout gear hanging on the wall behind Sarah." Ha ha ha! You still gots it, Bifferoonie!
That Dr. Ruth comment was very upsetting. I read it not long after a delicious hot tongue lunch sandwich at Eisenberg's. Now I feel slightly sick. Plus I have to hang out at Port Authority tonight to meet someone coming off an airport bus. Things are going rapidly downhill.
What did Dr. Ruths hot crusty vagina ever do to you, Marty! Huh?! hahaha
Crazy Ed reminds me of the car salesman in Weird Al's Vidiot from UHF...."I'm gonna club this baby seal...to make a better deal!!"
Percy's bar is my idea of a perfect watering hole. Dark, wooden, cute bar staff, and plenty of selections in the booze department.
Oh, Patsy. What a voice. What a song. Crazy? I say Amazing.
Digitally blinfolded shots are on the house!!
@onemorefoldedsunset: Sorry about that! If I were you, I'd avoid the Bowling Alley bar at Port Authority at all costs!
@Clacky: I'll never tell! And yes, Percy's is a great bar, thanks to Crazy Eddie for suggesting it!
"Digitally blinfolded shots are on the house!" Now you're talking my language!
i made a note to self a long time ago (maybe as far back as the 365 nights) not to be eatin or drinkin' wnen readin' not only MAD but anywhere MAD might comment (e,g. "I've heard that a large section of the senior rat population is going to retire to Florida this winter.")...
Al seems to be turned on by "black leather"...just an observation and no offense bringin' up a possible "dark side"...
damn MAD another classic post...a number of reasons that i thought of earlier...the wrok palace burns me out (some afternoons) and then i only want a couple "rutgut 45s" to put out the fire...
I do really crazy things all the time, but I can't think of anything offhand.

rr
also had a couple knocks of jameson's in honor of Crazy Eddie for not only suggestin' Percy's but also his comments here and there...another one that one should not be consumin' when readin'
clacky...lest not forget that willie penned that great tune...
rr
@rr: That cracks me up that you saw that EV Grieve comment! And I'm certain there's a dark side to Al! I should know, he was my 365 co-pilot last year! Great quote and I agree, Crazy Eddie leaves some funny and memorable comments at EVG!
It's insane You Think of Dr. Ruth's vagina .
The New Fedora & The people whom support it , are the people who are taking the flavor out of NYC !!!
Percy's Tavern VS The New Fedora = Percy's Tavern Knocked out The New Fedora in 13 Seconds !!!
Marty , when will You have Nathan's Famous VS Papaya King ?
@Ummo: Who doesn't think of Dr. Ruth's vagina? Maybe I'll do the Nathan's vs. Papaya King down the road, we'll see. I don't want to be too much of a hot dog.
Sorry I haven't been around, one of those weeks. This looks like a nice place to have on the standby list of just a nice place to spend a few hours.
@kari: Good to hear from you! It's on the standby list for sure!
