Something was buggy with the comments here yesterday, both Gene and csp told me they left comments, but I never got them. And last night I tried commenting back and it wouldn’t take my comment. It looked like it took it, but it didn’t show up, I realized right away because my comments aren’t moderated. Next to the red type where it says, “Post A New Comment” it said: (Unable to Post Comment.) I talked to Squarespace about this and it’s something that’s never happened. One of their support staff says if it does happen to try clearing out your cache. When it happened to me, I quit and restarted my browser and then my comment went through. I apologize if your comment was lost yesterday and hopefully it was just a bug that’s worked itself out.

Last night I was going to go and wander around Columbus Circle but it was pouring rain, so I went home and wrote my Johnnie Johnson story. Tonight it’s nice out, so it’s off to Columbus Circle we go!

Here we are at Penn Station, I think you know what's coming next...

The dreaded escalator ride. At first allis well, no one's pushing or shoving, but then...

This big fat slob has to ruin it all. He was pushing and shoving everyone out of the way. I was standing as far to the right as you can and still got pushed. And the stairway two inches away was almost empty. Asshole!

The good news is that as soon as I get to my platform the train is pulling up. I love it when that happens!

And here we are, the stairway to Columbus Circle.

A woman texting outside...what's everyone texting about? I don't do it.

Columbus Circle park is right across the street here.

I think the no smoking rule in the parks is ridiculous. They charge 13 bucks a pack for cigarettes here and then you can't smoke them anywhere.

A shot of the perimeter of the park.

Here's a shitty shot of the statue in the middle of the park. I really need to learn how to work this camera one of these days.

Colorful lit-up fountains spray around the entire circle of the park.

It's really pretty and creates a nice mist when you're standing close by.

But this nimrod chooses to ignore the surroundings and is texting wth someone instead.

More texting from this woman.

And yet another person hypnotized by their texting device.

What the fuck is everyone texting about? Is there something going on i don't know about? Because I just want to everyone to shut the fuck up.

But I guess that's not going to happen.

SHUT UP!

This guy has the right idea. Goodnight everybody and see you tomorrow after dark.

Here in Toulouse I don't see much people texting , but see them do it inside there home . I do see them glance at there text at Bars , but they get up & walk outside the bar & make a call after , which I think is very respectable of them , like if they where going outside for a smoke .

They should make a Bar that you have to shut your phone off to drink there !!! Like the Good Old Days when you didn't have a portable telephone , & had to use the phone booth to call your answering machine !!!

So when will you do my request ? I Miss a Good Old NYC Hotdog !!!

I love the Columbus Circle wall in the subway station ........ those awesome works of art with those little tiny tiles making up the sign. There are some great tile things in the subways .....

PS ......... maybe you can go with some kind of pre-approved comments from "known" emails ???

Marty, I would have loved to have read this post but I was too busy texting... bahaha!
I feel so bad for people that have their eyes on the phone for such a large part of their day... I can't imagine all of the wonderful things they are missing as life goes on around them. Oh well, they probably wouldn't appreciate it anyway. Kids these days hahah (HEAVY SIGH)

August 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

@Ummo: I wish they would ban texting like they do smoking. To me it's a lot more annoying. And I'll do the hot dog request soon!

@GENE: I like the tiles as well. I'll check into the known emails thing with the support staff. Jaws sent me an email and his comments aren't showing up. If anybody else is having trouble, please send me an email.

@Lindsay: It's sad to see people walking around New York City oblivious to all the sights and people watching because they're too busy texting. Kids these days! And adults too!

@Everyone: Some people's comments still aren't going through. I took the moderation off and I'm working with Squarespace on this, so hopefully it will get resolved. If you try to leave a comment and it doesn't go through, send me an email if you can. Thanks.

This is a 'Text' of your Emergency Broadcast System.
Should this have been an actual emergency, you will be instructed to stick your cell phone up your ass.

My comment must have gotten lost yesterday as well.
I know we've been playing phone tag. It's been a hectic week.

I see my first post didn't go through this morning. As far as texting,,,I don't even know how to do it, I have a cell phone for making or receiving phone calls, that's it. Maybe I'm a neanderthal, just that I don't get it,,, and maybe it's a good thing for this lost generation to text,,,why? it keeps them quiet while they text,,,,otherwise all you hear is "ya know" "ya know" "ya know",,,,enjoyed DeNiro scene of circle of trust,,,and The Cyrkle.

Stopped using that escalator in Penn Station a few years ago for the same reason. Every time someone passed it was like I got tourettes and figured that would come to no good. Hope you don't wuss out like me and keep outing those dillweeds. Never owned my own cellphone but used to have one through work. Often would work 12 hour shifts so what did I need the phone for when I was always there. It wasn't a job saving lives for christ sake. They didn't appreciate the low volume of use on it so I started using it on my personal time. So I too was a zombie at times. In my defense the time on it was spent flirting with a smart beautiful woman. At least you won't catch me dead in a Friday's, and if you do please get me out of there or report it to 911.

@MAD ...... EV Grieve reports that Banjo Jim's is open tonight .... a special "Farewell Show" ....

August 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

@"Boris": Ha ha ha! Sorry you couldn't edit it, but at least it came through! Let's try and yak tonight.

@Al: I don't get it either. All these people in a nice park and all they can do is stare at their texting device! Glad your comment made it through, maybe the bug in the comments has gone away. Let me know if you have any more problems leaving a comment.

@John: Flirting with a babe is somewhat understandable for sure! Glad to meet a fellow escalator runner hater! If I ever see you in a T.G.I. Friday's I will try and drag you out and revive you at the Papaya Dog!

@GENE: Maybe I'll try to make that, thanks!

Why is that park sign in Chinese! I for one... am just kidding. In regards to the missing comments and the texting, technology is like the bunny-hop; two steps forward and one step back. Work providing you with cell service is like leap-frog, it seems great that you can leap forward, but for most of the time you are left in a very vulnerable, awkward position. (I'm not going to get into it, you either get it or don't.)
If you should happen to spend an entire summer night up to high-jinks and shenanigans, Columbus Circle is a very sublime place to happen upon as the sun is rising.

August 5, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercsp

@csp: Nice call on the sign! Technology has kicked my ass today with the comments going buggy. They think they've found the problem and are working on it now, hopefully it'll be fixed tonight. I hadn't been to Columbus Circle in a while and forgot how nice it is there, if you can ignore the entire texting crowd.

a nice relaxin' post...i ride the bus to and from the wrok palace...textin' takes place all the time but what is worse is when riders answer their phones and start talkin' so loud that i can't think read or observe...not only in engrish but ebonics spanish and other languages that i can not identify...then the kid starts to throw a temper tantrum and the woman starts screamin' f bombs 'bout where were you last night...

oh by the way "nimrod" appeared to be searchin' for that one song that had been buggin' him all day long on his mp3 player...

@rr: That sounds like a nightmare on that bus! Great quote, perfect fit for today!

@Everyone: I've heard from Squarespace and there was a bug that they think is now fixed. If anyone has a problem with the comments, I'd appreciate an email if you could. Sorry about all this today, hopefully it's back to normal. Or as normal as it can get here! Thanks for your patience everybody!

Comment Update: Jaws still can't comment, if anyone else is having trouble, send me an email if you can, this is driving me batshit crazy!

August 5, 2011 | Registered CommenterMarty After Dark

@MAD: That's the first bold comment I've seen you make. Carpe diem good sir.

August 5, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercsp

@MAD ... It's hard to know when you comment ... becuase your comments do not go out on the email notifications ........ so you have to keep on checking to see if you said anything :(

August 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

@csp: I can be bold when I want to and even italicize when I'm in the mood! Who knew?

@GENE: That's because my IP address is masked so my page views don't get counted. There's nothing I can do about that.

The fountains are beautiful. Fun tour as always. Wait--no mirror shot. No photo of Gumby. He was having fun on the side or perhaps texting by the fountain. Gumby has a roving eye. Have a great weekend Marty.

August 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJaws the Cabbie

@Jaws: Congratulations. Now that you have Edison power-fed telegraph apparatus interfaced with the manual typewriter, the Marconi Machine should transmit via the Graham Bell telephone portal without anymore problems. If you do have more difficulties, text Marty the following message; "Dot-Dot-Dot, Dash-Dash-Dash, Dot-Dot-Dot".

August 6, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterwise-ass

@Ummo: I had no idea about Louis Armstrong, thanks for the link! And that video is addictive!

@Melanie: I'll try to get a mirror shot in tonight! And Gumby's in today's post when it goes up. You have a great weekend too!

@Jaws: Finally! Welcome back, Kotter! Looks like the comments section is cured! Hip, hip fucking hooray!

@wise ass: I actually sent that to Jaws yesterday along with about 100 other emails!

@Everyone: Today's post is running late, check back around 2pm. I slept in.

Hey this is the first time all week I'm not typing this comment on my smart phone. How ironic... ;)

August 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBritta

@Britta: That is funny and ironic! As Robin Williams once said, "When you look up irony in the dictionary, it says: "See: irony."

August 6, 2011 | Registered CommenterMarty After Dark

Well 95% of my texts are to cute boys so I feel they are justified. It's probably a good thing that the places I go to relax and get away don't have cell service. Forces you to enjoy nature for what it is.

August 6, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkari

@kari: I'm not totally anti-texting, but when you're in a nice park like Columbus Circle, why would you want to be staring at an iPhone? I can see it more if you're on the subway or something, but I'd rather read or people watch any day of the week.
